Born in El Salto, Jalisco, José Gutiérrez Fernández followed in the footsteps of his father, also a former Guadalajaraplayer, inheriting not only his talent but also his love for the Rojiblancos colors.

In the late 1970s, he began his journey. He played for Tapatío, the team where the club develops its young prospects, before making the leap to the first team.

A defender of an era

‘Pelón’ spent his entire professional career with Guadalajara, establishing himself as a tough, reliable left-back with great game awareness. Gutiérrez wore only the Rojiblanca throughout his career and, over 12 seasons (1980–1991), was part of a defense that defined an era in Mexican football, known for its solidity and consistency.

He shared the backline with notable names and was a key figure during one of the club’s most outstanding defensive periods, for several years being part of one of the least-conceded defenses in the league.

During his time with Guadalajara, he played 294 league matches between the Regular Season and Liguilla, accumulating over 25,000 minutes on the pitch and scoring 4 goals—figures that reflect his consistency and importance within the team. His final tournament with Guadalajara was the 1990-91 season, in which he made only 3 appearances.

Champion with Guadalajara

His highest point came in the 1986-87 season, when he was a fundamental part of the team that secured Rebaño’s ninth league title, defeating Cruz Azul in the final.

His performances on the left flank were decisive, contributing not only defensively but also with forward runs that led to key plays for the team.

Character, commitment, and legacy

On the pitch, ‘Pelón’ stood out for his total commitment in every play, his physical style, and his constant professionalism. He was a player who made no distinction between matches—he always competed at the highest level, reflecting the DNA of Guadalajara.

For your dedication and love for the Rojiblanca, today the entire Nación Chiva sends you a hug to heaven, ‘Pelón’.
