‘The Ligue 1 table is distorted’ – Lille rage at disallowed equaliser against PSG

Lille OSC have raged against the officiating in their 3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain yesterday evening.

Les Dogues believe that they were denied a legitimate goal when Tiago Santos’s effort was disallowed for being offside. At the time, PSG were leading 2-1 and the goal would have put Lille level with around eight minutes left to play.

However, according to the Lille president Olivier Létang, the referee allegedly told him after the match that the goal should have stood. From a freekick, Edon Zhegrova lobbed the ball towards Benjamin André who headed the ball across goal. The ball found its way to Santos courtesy of a touch from Thomas Meunier.

Lille reveal their frustrations: ‘If we put in a VAR that doesn’t do its job, it’s useless’

The problem Lille believe is that Meunier’s intervention was not considered and the VAR looked at the wrong point of contact drawing their offside decision from André’s header which placed Santos in an offside position. Lille’s president and their manager Bruno Génésio voiced their frustrations in the post-match comments.

Létang stated, “We are putting millions of euros on the table to have VAR and to be sure that the right decisions are being made […] The Ligue 1 table is distorted, all the while we have the technological tools to make the right decisions. But what are those in charge of this doing?”

Génésio was of a similar opinion, “Our second goal was valid, if we put in a VAR that doesn’t do its job, it’s useless.” He joked, “On the bus, what were the referees doing, were they watching something else, a film?”
