Ruben Amorim has claimed a very unwanted record after leading Manchester United to their 15th Premier League defeat as manager.
The Red Devils looked an improved outfit against Arsenal on Sunday, and arguably deserved more from the game, but that won’t be much consolation as they lost 1-0 at Old Trafford.
It wasn’t just a disappointing start to the new season for United; it was also a continuation of the wretched form that saw them finish 15th in the table last term.
Indeed, Amorim may have guided the team all the way to the Europa League final, but his win rate in the top flight stands at just under 26 per cent. In 28 Premier League outings under his watch they won just seven, drawing six and losing the other 15.
The Portuguese tactician has now overtaken Paul Clement as the manager to reach that many defeats in the quickest amount of time. The Brazil assistant manager’s spell at Swansea City started well, winning manager of the month for January 2017 after masterminding victory over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. But he went on to lose 15 of his first 29 games in charge before being sacked midway through the following season.
Incidentally, Clement was on the coaching staff for the next manager on the list; Steve Kean lost exactly half of his first 30 games at Blackburn Rovers. Kean kept the Lancashire outfit up in his first half season in charge, but they were relegated the following season. Remarkably, he kept his job until late September 2012, when he claimed he was “forced to resign”.
Faring only slightly better is Steven Gerrard, who also enjoyed a bright start in his first managerial role in the Premier League, but oversaw 15 defeats in just 31 games at Aston Villa and was sacked less than a year after replacing Dean Smith. He is tied with Tony Pulis, who went on to have a very successful time with Stoke City in the first tier.
