“The most doable”: Paul Scholes explains why United must sign PL speedster | OneFootball

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged the club to consider a move for Lewis Hall before the end of the summer. The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the English full-back for some time, but are running out of time to get a deal across the line.

Hall is coming off an impressive campaign with Newcastle United, and is reportedly considered a priority for the left-back position by United. The Red Devils are looking for a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw, whose contract expires next summer.

Shaw has struggled in his first two appearances of the new campaign after starting every game in the Premier League last season. The 31 year old failed to impress in the 5-2 win over Ipswich Town on Sunday, and Scholes believes that is the cue for United to invest in the position.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes pointed out that United’s performance against the Tractor Boys summed up the team’s situation right now. He said: “I think United would have taken going 1-0 down, the way they played in the first half. It could have been two or three.”

“What we saw yesterday, I think that sums what you’re going to get from United. They could have been two or three down but also, you look at the second half, and they were devastating. They are absolutely devastating going forward.”

The Ginger Prince also argued that the team needs defensive reinforcements and suggested that Carrick could do with Hall in the squad. He said: “100 per cent (if United should reinforce the backline). That will have been going on for months, you’re not just talking the last couple of days.”

“Do you know one thing that might help Michael? Luke Shaw getting done yesterday [against Ipswich] like he did. So he might go, ‘Look, we need him’, and you think Lewis Hall might be the most doable who is out there and available.”

“You would have thought some work on that has been done. The amount of rumours there have been, you would have thought some work on that has been done.”

United will struggle without defensive reinforcements

Scholes went on to acknowledge that a move for Hall may be unlikely and suggested that failure to bolster the defence could come back to haunt United. He continued: “It doesn’t feel like they’re going to do anything does it? Lewis Hall was floated about for a bit.”

“I don’t think it’s going to happen and this is why United are going to be United again: we’re probably not much different from last year and not much different from the last five years.

‘They can look devastating at times but at times they’ll look like they did in the first half [against Ipswich] where they concede goals. Look, it’s no surprise, who is shocked? You’ve got the same back-four you’ve had for five years. What’s going to change?’

Final Thoughts

Rio Ferdinand recently put his support behind Shaw, but the left-back position certainly looks like United’s bane at the moment. INEOS, as such, cannot afford to end the summer without adding cover for the veteran full-back.
