Memphis Depay has wrote his name into the history books after scoring for the Netherlands against Lithuania.
Depay opened the scoring for the Dutch in their 2026 World Cup qualifier, notching his 51st goal for the Oranje after an assist from Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo.
The 31-year-old’s effort has seen him become his country’s outright record scorer. Depay had levelled the previous 50-goal landmark, held by Robin van Persie, earlier this year and has now eclipsed his compatriot.
It’s an astonishing achievement from the forward, who has shown incredible consistency in a Dutch shirt despite a nomadic club career. Depay, who currently plays his club football with Corinthians in Brazil, has now scored 51 goals in 104 caps for the Netherlands.
He has overtaken greats of Dutch football to take the top spot, including Patrick Kluivert, Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Johan Cruyff.
Furthermore, just six players have made more appearances for the Dutch than Depay, who will now have Wesley Sneijder’s 134-cap record in his sights.
