Sunderland visit Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday, with both camps juggling significant fitness issues before the Tyne-Wear derby.

According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland’s injury list is longer, though the hosts also face key absences and suffered a setback during Wednesday’s Champions League defeat to Barcelona. Both managers are due to provide updates at their Friday press conferences.

Bruno Guimaraes has been sidelined since February with a hamstring injury and will miss this game, with a return expected after the subsequent international break.

Lewis Miley has been out since late January after a dead leg and subsequent muscle damage. He is close to a comeback but, like Guimaraes, is expected to wait until after the international break.

Sandro Tonali was withdrawn early in the second half against Barcelona with a hip or groin issue and is a major doubt for Sunday. For Sunderland, left back Reinildo has returned to full training and is expected to be available this weekend. He excelled in the reverse fixture and his availability would be a major boost.
