This current 2026/27 term, of course, marks the 60th anniversary of Celtic’s greatest ever season, when the Hoops lifted all FIVE trophies they competed for as Jock Stein’s side swept the boards both at home and on the continent.
The season culminated in the club’s single most defining achievement when they became the first British and non-Latin team to lift the European Cup, the forerunner of today’s UEFA Champions League.
On May 25, 1967, the gleaming trophy held aloft by Billy McNeill was added to the domestic clean sweep haul of the league title, the Scottish Cup, the League Cup and the Glasgow Cup.
In all, 62 games were played featuring no fewer than 21 players over the course of those games from ever-presents such as John Clark and Tommy Gemmell who appeared in all 62 games down to Danish goalkeeper, Bent Martin who played in one solitary Glasgow Cup tie.
A total of 11 players - John Clark, Tommy Gemmell, Billy McNeill, Ronnie Simpson, Bobby Murdoch, Stevie Chalmers, Bertie Auld, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Lennox, John Hughes and Charlie Gallagher – took part in all five competitions and therefore played a part in winning each of the five trophies.
From those 11 Celts who took part in all five competitions, a total of eight – Ronnie Simpson, Tommy Gemmell, Bobby Murdoch, Billy McNeill, John Clark, Bobby Lennox, Bertie Auld and Stevie Chalmers – played in all four of the finals plus the title-winning game at Ibrox.
Players who just missed out in taking part in all competitions were Jim Craig who wasn’t fielded in the Glasgow Cup, and Joe McBride and Willie O’Neill who missed out on the Scottish Cup games.
Here we have a breakdown of each trophy win and the Celts who participated in the club’s greatest ever season.
A total of 19 Celts played in the 34 league games of the 1966/67 season, with the title being clinched in a captivating 2-2 draw at Ibrox in the 33rd game of the league schedule when Jimmy Johnstone scored both of Celtic's goals to seal the title.
Five of the Lisbon Lions had totals of 30-plus games in the title run, while others such as John Fallon, John Cushley and Ian Young took part in one game each. Another who managed a single appearance was Jim Brogan, who came off the bench to replace Charlie Gallagher in a 2-0 win over Motherwell at Fir Park – this was the first season to feature a substitute on the bench.
There were six Scottish Cup games played, with 14 players used over the course of those cup ties from beating Arbroath 4-0 in Celtic’s first game of the competition to beating Aberdeen 2-0 in the Hampden final in front of 126,102 spectators, with Willie Wallace netting both of the Hoops’ goals.
No fewer than five of the Lions played in all six of the games, while the Scottish Cup also gave youngster, David Cattanach the opportunity to join the 21-strong player list of Celtic’s greatest ever season as the central-defender was fielded in the team’s 7-0 win over Elgin City and the 5-3 defeat of Queen’s Park.
A total of 14 players took part in Celtic’s 10 League Cup outings, from the opening sectional 2-0 win over Hearts at Tynecastle to the final win over Rangers, with Bobby Lennox scoring the only goal of the game at Hampden.
Celtic won all six of their sectional games with an aggregate score of 23-3 as another clutch of five Lions played in all 10 games, and the last of those group games, a 1-0 win over St Mirren at Love Street, presented Jim Craig and Charlie Gallagher with their only League Cup ties of the campaign.
There were three Glasgow Cup ties, with a total of 16 Celts getting a run out in the tournament that delivered three 4-0 wins when Bobby Lennox netted a hat-trick in the opener against Rangers at Ibrox AND the final against Partick Thistle (he also scored in the semi-final).
A total of six Celts from the Lions’ squad played in all three games and the 1966/67 tournament marked the only appearance ever of goalkeeper, Bent Martin in the first team at Celtic.
Saving the best ‘til last and the then nine-game format of the European Cup saw a total of 15 players used in those nine games, from the opener in the 2-0 home win over FC Zurich to the 2-1 win over Inter Milan on the sun-kissed Lisbon turf on May 25, 1967.
A total of seven Celts – John Clark, Tommy Gemmell, Billy McNeill, Ronnie Simpson, Bobby Murdoch, Stevie Chalmers and Jimmy Johnstone – played in all nine of the games while, at the other end of the scale, Joe McBride played in two before succumbing to injury, and Charlie Gallagher was also fielded in two games on the way to Lisbon.
So, from the 11 men on the pitch at Lisbon to that single Glasgow Cup appearance, we salute all of the 21 players who played their part in Celtic’s greatest ever season.
