FLW's Coventry City fan pundit has suggested a player for the club to sign this summer

Coventry City have had a busy summer transfer window, adding a number of fresh faces to Mark Robins’ squad.

The Sky Blues narrowly missed out on a play-off place last year, having reached the play-off final in the prior campaign.

The Championship club will be aiming to fight for Premier League promotion again this year, having added the likes of Jack Rudoni and Brandon Thomas-Asante to their squad.

But they still have until August 30 to finalise any remaining deals before the window closes for the remainder of the calendar year.

Free agents can still be registered to the squad after this deadline if there is space to do so, which could also prove useful for Coventry given some of the players still available.

Coventry City urged to pursue move for free agent full-back Brandon Williams

FLW’sCoventry fan pundit Neil Littlewood believes that Brandon Williams would be an ideal realistic signing the club could make this summer.

He has claimed that the full-back could provide cover at right-back for Milan van Ewijk, while also being able to bring competition to left-back as well.

“I’m going to go a bit left-field because I know he’s a free agent and there’s a lot of people saying they want cover at full-back,”Littlewood told Football League World of his ideal Sky Blues signing before August 30.

“Now there’s someone who could probably play right-back and left-back, and has experience in this league, and that’s Brandon Williams, who has just left Man United.

“I think he would be fantastic to either start left-back, or provide cover for Milan van Ewijk at right-back when needed as well, which would allow Jake Bidwell to still play, and [Jay] Dasilva.

“I think that gives us real options at full-back, and potentially a starter as well.

“A lot of people have said centre-midfield is a weak area, but I think when we’re fully fit we’ve got a strong enough midfield.

“If we had everyone available, I think left-back is our weak spot, so that’s where I’d look at personally.

“I’d still want a midfielder to come, and a centre-half to come, but I think if you’re looking at a realistic signing I think Brandon Williams is the one that stands out to me.”

Brandon Williams’ Championship experience means he could be ideal for Coventry City

Williams is currently without a club after leaving Man United earlier this summer.

He spent last season on loan with Ipswich Town, playing 15 times in the Championship for Kieran McKenna’s side as they gained promotion to the Premier League.

The 23-year-old contributed two goals, having started eight of his 15 appearances, but the second half of the season was a write-off for the versatile defender, having struggled with injuries and illness.

The full-back also spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Norwich City, where he made 26 appearances in the Premier League, competing a further 21 times in the top flight with Man United as well.

Williams wasn’t quite able to nail down a place in McKenna’s side on a regular basis last season due to fitness issues, but he is still more than capable of competing at a Championship level.

The full-back is versatile, and can comfortably play on either wing as a full-back.

This could be what Coventry need, as they currently lack an obvious alternative option for van Ewijk if he gets injured.

Given he is a free agent, this could be a relatively cheap and risk-free deal to complete, and it could strengthen Robins’ side for their promotion push this year.
