Folarin Balogun joined an exclusive group of footballers overnight as the USA forward scored and was sent off during his side’s World Cup win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Balogun opened the scoring as the World Cup co-hosts progressed to the last 16 with a 2-0 win, but will miss their next clash with Belgium after receiving a red card.
The AS Monaco striker was punished for ‘serious foul play’ after a tangle with Tarik Muharemović, as Balogun appeared to accidentally land on the Bosnian defender’s ankle.
Referee Raphael Claus deemed the incident a red card offence and Balogun will be banned for the next stage. It’s a big blow to Mauricio Pochettino’s side to lose their leading scorer, who has netted three times at the tournament.
Balogun is only fourth player to score a goal and receive a red card in a FIFA World Cup knockout match. He’s the first in 20 years to have done so, with the most recent one of the most infamous World Cup moments of all time.
Zinedine Zidane was memorably sent off in the 2006 final, with the French midfielder headbutting Marco Materazzi. Zidane had scored from the penalty spot in the game, but was unable to step up in the shootout as 10-man France lost to Italy.
Ronaldinho scored and was sent off during Brazil’s 2-1 quarter-final win over England in 2002. The midfielder’s looping free-kick had caught out David Seaman, before he was dismissed for a high tackle on Danny Mills.
His compatriot, Garrincha, was the first man to score and be sent off in a knockout game. Garrincha had inspired Brazil’s 4-2 semi-final win over Chile, scoring twice and setting up another for Vava. A costly late red card saw him suspended for the final, only for a shock turn of events.
Despite his role in the host’s exit, a petition to allow Garrincha to feature in the final gained momentum and was backed by Chile president Jorge Alessandri. It proved successful, and Garrincha played his part as Brazil beat Czechoslovakia 3-1 to lift the trophy.
