Sure, a quick look at the leading scorers in Europe’s top five leagues is an easy way to calculate this season’s most prolific players but which stars have been the most potent?

Spoiler: There’s no Erling Haaland.

The players with the most goals-per-90 in Europe this season

5. Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) and Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona) – 1.18

Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski kickstart this list, two players who have won three of the last four European Golden Shoes between them

Kane became just the second Englishman to win that award last season after a prolific debut season at Bayern Munich. He’s started the new season in a similar vein and is the Bundesliga’s joint-leading scorer on 11 goals.

Robert Lewandowski has also averaged 1.18 goals per 90 minutes this season. Despite turning 36 in August, Lewandowski remains an elite forward and leads La Liga with 14 goals scored this season. The prolific Pole has helped a free-scoring Barcelona to the top of the table.

4. Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt) – 1.19

Omar Marmoush is tied with Harry Kane on 11 Bundesliga goals this season. The Egyptian has been the surprise package of the campaign at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he has scored 11 times and created seven more in just 10 league appearances.

No player in Europe’s top five leagues has more goal involvements this season (18) and Europe’s elite clubs have taken note.

3. Bradley Barcola (Paris Saint-Germain) – 1.21

When Kylian Mbappe left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, few anticipated Bradley Barcola to be the player who replaced his goals. The 22-year-old underlined his potential last season but a return of just four Ligue 1 goals hardly hinted at what was to come.

Barcola has been arguably Ligue 1’s leading light this season with 10 goals in just 10 starts for the French champions. He has carried the torch in the absence of the injured Goncalo Ramos and the left-winger leads Mason Greenwood and Jonathan David in the race for the Golden Boot.

2. Ayoze Perez (Villarreal) – 1.22

Villarreal snapped up Ayoze Perez from Real Betis for a fee of just €4m in the summer and it has certainly proved to be money well spent. The former Newcastle and Leicester forward has hit seven goals in just eight La Liga appearances and 10 in all competitions for The Yellow Submarine.

He made his Spain debut, aged 30, in the summer and made one appearance as La Roja won Euro 2024.

1. Mateo Retegui (Atalanta) – 1.28

Atalanta entered the market for reinforcements in the summer after Gianluca Scamacca was sidelined with an ACL injury. Whether Gian Piero Gasperini’s side would have done so without that cruel luck is unclear, but it’s a decision that has paid off handsomely.

Mateo Retegui joined from Genoa in a €28m deal and is Serie A’s top scorer this season. He’s netted 11 goals in 12 league games to leave Moise Kean (8) and Marcus Thuram (7) trailing in the race for The Capocannoniere award.
