Just off the road to Dortmund, Restaurante Carlos in Schwerte became a Borussia Dortmund haunt, from Jurgen Klopp to Edin Terzic, who used it as a family refuge. A striking 16th-century ship honours Portuguese explorers inside.

According to El Correo, owner Carlos Couto, a German of Portuguese parentage, serves charcoal staples and a roast chicken cooked in 13 minutes that has charmed Dortmund figures.

The room fills from 5 pm as Couto and his wife run the place. Klopp made it a Borussia meeting point, a habit that continued after he left.

Couto, who speaks fluent Spanish and is a Dortmund member, has befriended players and calls Klopp an impressive figure. He once organised a full pre-season in the Algarve, even finding opponents.

Couto says Terzic, now Athletic’s new coach, often came with his family, including when he led the first team. They met after this site opened in 2019, following five previous restaurants in Dortmund.

On Guille Bueno, a Galician who played for Dortmund’s reserves from 2021 to 2024, Couto interpreted and urged a promotion. Terzic felt he had quality but something missing, then an injury in the final pre-season friendly stopped him, though he did make two squads, the Bundesliga opener with Union Berlin and a Champions League tie with PSG.

Couto rarely misses Dortmund and tries to follow Sporting Braga, his parents’ city. He plans to move there soon and spends summers in Portugal with a rotisserie truck at local festivals. He will watch Athletic closely, disliked this year’s Champions League 4-1 in Dortmund, yet trusts Terzic to do well.
