The race for the MLS Golden Boot is clearly still on with the regular season going down to the wire.
Coming into Wednesday night’s away clash with Nashville SC, D.C. United could only boast an outside chance of making the playoffs.
However, Christian Benteke still has an opportunity to end the season at the head of the goalscoring class and extend his lead in the MLS Golden Boot charts.
Sitting on 21 goals, the former Belgian international forward got just enough on Jacob Murrell’s header across the face of goal before a deft touch saw him slot past keeper Joe Willis.
Now on 22 goals, Benteke is the first D.C. United player to hit 20 goals or more since Luciano Emílio (2007).
That put the MLS leading goal scorer four ahead of Denis Bouanga (LAFC) and Luis Suárez (Inter Miami) until Bouanga had something to say against St.Louis City.
Deadlocked at home in stoppage time before the half-time interval, the Gabonese international forward produced a bit of magic when he shimmied past three defenders before a well-struck curling effort put LAFC in the lead, giving him his 19th of the season.
The race is still on!
