The terms of Barcelona’s agreement with Girona over the loan of Marc-Andre Ter Stegen do not seem to be favourable for the Blaugrana in any capacity.

After all, they continue to pay him most of his wages while also allowing him to move out and gather much-needed minutes ahead of the FIFA World Cup – a situation many thought they would leverage to push for his exit.

As relayed by SPORT, however, Barcelona’s plan is more deep-rooted and there is a clear reason why the player has been allowed to leave on such free terms.

The Spanish outlet confirm that the German international is no longer in Barcelona’s plans for the future. After all, Joan Garcia has solidified himself in that position and is expected to continue as their mainstay.

Their idea of sending Ter Stegen on loan to Girona is in the hope of his market value improving in the coming six months, and also the FIFA World Cup he will play as a starter later this year.

As one of the highest earners in the squad, there is an urgent need to get his wages off the club’s roster, and improving his market value and creating a market for him is the first step in that direction.

While the final decision does rest in Ter Stegen’s hands, Barcelona hope that the player’s performances in the coming months for club and country can attract interest from Saudi Arabia and Europe.

Barcelona are prepared to facilitate any departure, even possibly with a free transfer and a contract termination, as long as they are freed from the burden of covering his wages.

The final decision will lie with the player and Barcelona will not force him out if he opts to see out his contract until 2028. For them, however, the ideal scenario is a summer departure for the captain so they can improve their financial situation.
