The Hatters suffered relegation from the Championship last year under the 41-year-old, who was appointed as the successor to Rob Edwards in January.

He oversaw 33 games in charge at Kenilworth Road, but his side won on just 12 occasions, with the club sitting 11th in the table at the time of his dismissal.

A 2-0 defeat to Stevenage on Saturday proved his final fixture in charge with the loss leaving the team nine points of the league leaders, and three behind sixth place Huddersfield Town.

Bloomfield had taken over after earning plaudits with his work at Wycombe Wanderers, who were in contention for promotion from the Championship before falling away once the coach departed.

The Luton board have confirmed that Bloomfield, along with his assistant coaches, have been dismissed due to poor performances at the start of this season.

They have claimed that the team have performed below expectations, which has led to them opting for a change in the dugout, with Alex Lawless set to take over for the time being.

“Performances and results from the opening 11 matches of the current campaign in League One have fallen below the levels expected, and the Board of Directors has taken the difficult decision to relieve Matt, his assistant Richard Thomas, first team coach Lee Harrison and first team analyst Ben Cirne of their duties,” wrote the club in a statement on their website.

“The Board wishes to thank Matt, Richard, Lee and Ben for their efforts during a difficult period for the Club and wishes them the very best for their future careers.”

Supporters have expressed their sympathy towards Bloomfield following this decision, but the general consensus is that the right choice has been made.

The coach has been dubbed the right man at the wrong time by many, with the search now beginning for his permanent successor.

Bloomfield’s lack of experience in the Championship has also been cited as a reason why his appointment didn’t quite make sense, as he ultimately was unable to prevent the Hatters from suffering relegation.

However, many have also wished him the best with whatever comes next, indicating that the relationship between the manager and the fans never reached a toxic stage.

Next up in the league for Luton is a clash against Mansfield Town on 18 October.

Luton’s poor start had Matt Bloomfield under pressure

Losing 2-0 to Stevenage was always going to put Bloomfield under pressure given where it left the club in the table.

Luton were expected during pre-season to be in the mix for automatic promotion, but now they look like they might not even get a top six place.

The pressure is also now on the board to find the right appointment that can immediately turn things around.

Back-to-back relegations was disappointing enough for supporters, but ending up mid-table in League One would only make things worse, and highlight how far the club have fallen in a short span of time.
