The “soul has gone” from Manchester United says Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney has delivered a scathing assessment of his former club, claiming the “soul has gone” from Manchester United and expressing “no faith” in manager Ruben Amorim’s ability to reverse their decline.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast, produced by BBC Sport, the club’s record goalscorer said United felt “broken” and that he now goes to matches expecting them to lose. His comments followed a 3-1 defeat to Brentford, which left United languishing 14th in the Premier League with just 34 points from Amorim’s 33 league matches in charge.

Rooney’s despair reflects a deepening angst at Old Trafford. United’s 15th-place finish last season was their lowest since 1974, and their current form offers little sign of progress. The club remains winless in their last eight league away games, with Amorim yet to secure consecutive victories.

The culture of that football club has gone,” Rooney said. “There needs to be big changes, manager, players, whatever it takes to get Manchester United back.” He added that several current players “don’t deserve to wear the shirt,” while staff redundancies have further eroded the club’s identity.

Amorim Under Scrutiny

Despite mounting criticism, United’s hierarchy continues to back Amorim, who insists he is “not concerned” about his future. The Portuguese coach has been criticised for persisting with his 3-4-2-1 formation, a tactical rigidity that could ultimately cost him his job.

Rooney, while acknowledging Amorim’s potential, was blunt: “I honestly hope he can turn it round, but if you’re asking me if I believe he will, I’ve got no faith.
