“The team needs” Lewis-Skelly reveals his best role at Arsenal

Myles Lewis-Skelly was a superb midfield talent in the Arsenal youth teams, but when he broke into the senior side, he had to play as a left back, and he performed superbly in that role.

He was so impressive that he became a starter for the senior England national team and played in matches against teams such as Real Madrid and PSG in the Champions League.

Lewis-Skelly adapts to Arsenal’s needs

However, Mikel Arteta is a manager who constantly improves his squad, and after adding Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapié to the team, Lewis-Skelly could no longer get regular game time.

There were suggestions that he should leave on loan at the start of this year to gain more playing time and strengthen his chances of breaking into the England team for the 2026 World Cup, but he remained at Arsenal.

Towards the end of the season, he broke into Arsenal’s midfield and has continued to receive game time in that role despite the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes. His versatility has therefore allowed him to contribute in different areas of the team.

Lewis-Skelly explains his preferred position

The question remains over where Lewis-Skelly is best suited to play for Arsenal, particularly given his experience in both midfield and at left back. When asked about his position, he explained his view clearly.

Lewis-Skelly said via Football365: “I’m a midfielder. But at the end of the day it’s all down to the team needs. No player, no individual is bigger than the team goal. Whatever has to help the team, I’ll do it.”

That flexibility has been an important part of his development at Arsenal, where he has already demonstrated that he can perform effectively in more than one position. With his midfield opportunities increasing, his preferred role could become increasingly important to his development at the club.
