The Three Things Swansea Must Get Right Against Watford | OneFootball

There has not been a goalless draw between Swansea and Watford in their last 14 meetings, so tomorrow’s clash should be no dull affair if this trend continues. Swansea have had a sharp start to the season and sit 3rd in the table while Watford have recently taken a 5-1 home thrashing against Peterborough in the League Cup. This does not mean that the Swans should get complacent though, as here are the three things Swansea must get right against Watford.

Predicted Lineup

Before looking at the things Swansea need to do to get all 3 points here’s the lineup that Vitor Matos may field:

Swansea Lineup (4-3-3) Vigoroux, Lissah, Seelt, Welsh, Tymon, Eustaquio, Fulton, Stamenić, Yeo, Idah, Eom

Matos will likely not want to take any risks with Cabango, so Seelt may start for his debut. Opoku’s unfortunate injury after his goal against Derby will see him miss the game, and it looks as though Vipotnik is leaving so Idah will retain his spot in the starting XI. Eustaquio will probably start after his great showing off the bench at Pride Park.

Translating possession into goals

Despite their 3-0 thrashing of Derby in their last outing, one of the Swansea fans’ biggest qualms with Matos’ football is how the play can be slow at times. The possession in the Derby game was a lot more even, and most of Swansea’s chances came through quick breaks from winning the ball back rather than long spells of possession. Utilising their quick wingers on the break has bore fruit for the Swans but they need to make the most of their high possession and be more creative.

Jay Fulton’s performance against Stoke comes to mind when discussing this, being positive and creative in possession. If Swansea can get that out of all their midfielders, they would cruise to promotion. New signing Eustaquio fits this bill and Swans fans will be excited to see him in action tomorrow. Leveraging the Canadian’s ability in possession would be well advised to get more out of their play on the ball rather than just flat possession football.

Nullify Iker Bravo

After coming up through Barcelona’s La Masia, playing at Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid Castilla, Iker Bravo now finds himself in sunny Watford. Since joining in the summer, he has been arguably the Hornets’ best player and best summer signing. Swansea need to keep a keen eye on him influencing the game, and should keep him as quiet as possible. Using Marko Stamenić to mark him tightly could help, but Bravo is slippery and the Kiwi midfielder must be careful not to lose track of him.

The Spaniard already opened his account for the season in a win over Southampton, but he will be looking to cause some damage at the Swansea.com Stadium and extend his goal count. The 21-year-old has that striker’s instinct and can win headers, but as a 10 he can also create chances for his teammates and likes to take on his man. Bravo will be a handful and Matos should carefully plan how to minimise his influence on the game.

Maximise counter attacks

Watford have shown weakness on the counter, especially against Wrexham and Peterborough. Swansea have enough pace on the wings and quality in final third to exploit this issue. As mentioned earlier, Fulton and Eustaquio can be crucial on the counter with their passing ability, and the pace of Eom and Yeo can cause problems for that Watford defence. Swansea have shown competency on counter attacks so far this season, so this should be something that they have identified as a possible source of goals.

Watford’s defenders are also not the most comfortable when being pressed, so the Swans should take note of this and press when they can too. Swansea’s counter-press when losing the ball is a mark left on Matos from his time working with Jurgen Klopp, the King of the gegenpress. Using their strong press against the Hornets can lead to a few opportunities if done right.
