FC Barcelona may not have made many signings in the summer, but one shrewd piece of business that they did was to bring in talented Swedish winger Roony Bardghji on a bargain fee alongside Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford.
Roony has said out loud what many young attackers at Barcelona often think but do not always admit. The Swedish forward is not happy with how little he has played so far this season, and he made that frustration clear while away with his national team.
As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Roony spoke from Sweden’s camp in Valencia, where he is preparing for the playoff against Ukraine, and did not hide his disappointment over his role in his first season at Barca. He said:
“The truth is that up to this moment I have had little playing time. I have patience, but honestly I think I deserved to play more.”
Roony also refused to pretend he was fine with the situation. When asked directly, he said:
“No. One hundred percent I am not happy, but this is football.”
From a Barcelona perspective, there is something understandable in that reaction, especially for a young attacker trying to break through in a squad where minutes on the right wing are so hard to find. Roony has played 615 minutes in all competitions, producing two goals and four assists.
Still, the young forward also showed some maturity. He made clear that his frustration is not aimed at team-mates or the coach, saying:
“I respect to the maximum those who have been in the squad for a long time.”
The unfortunate thing for him is that he is directly competing for a place in the team with Lamine Yamal, who is one of the best players in the world at just 18. The Spaniard is unlikely to miss a lot of minutes as he is fundamental to the team.
Thus, Roony’s best shot at convincing Hansi Flick is by becoming more versatile and starting to play in more positions. He can take inspiration from Raphinha and learn to play on the left-wing as a left-footer and let’s wait and see how his development pans out.
