Anneke Borbe and Kim Little have both been nominated for January’s Women’s Super League player of the month.
The Gunners played two league games in January, drawing 0-0 against Manchester United and winning 2-0 against Chelsea.
And both Anneke Borbe and Kim Little played every minute of both matches.
Borbe contributed spectacularly to the successive clean sheets, with some impressive saves, with club captain Little going about her work in midfield as assiduously as has come to be expected from the 35-year-old.
The two started February in style as well, albeit outside of the WSL – Little was named player of the match as Arsenal won the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Borbe played most of the final but was stretchered off after a nasty collision with Lotte Wubben-Moy in the closing seconds. Arsenal have since signed experienced goalkeeper Barbora Votikova on loan, suggesting that Borbe may be absent as she recovers from that knock.
The other nominees are Jenna Clark of Liverpool, Kirsty Hanson of Aston Villa, Kerolin Nicoli of Manchester City and Jess Park of Manchester United.
Defender Clark was in the starting line-up for both of Liverpool’s WSL matches as they secured back-to-back clean sheets against London City Lionesses and Tottenham Hotspur – the latter in a 2-0 win, their first of the season.
Hanson opened the scoring as Aston Villa hosted Manchester United, albeit in a losing effort, and then scored the winner against Brighton and Hove Albion two weeks later.
Kerolin has had an eye-catching month for the league leaders, starting with a solo goal in a 2-0 win over Everton, then a composed finish against London City Lionesses in a 2-1 victory – and most recently an impressive hat-trick in the 5-1 demolition of Chelsea.
Park scored one and assisted one in Manchester United’s 4-1 win away at Aston Villa, and was part of the hard-working effort that secured a goalless draw against Arsenal when down to ten players after the sending-off of Jayde Riviere.
