The history books will simply show this game as Newcastle 1 Southampton 0.

However, in the moment, the here and now, all of the debate is about one incident.

Newcastle United AND the crowd were brilliant in adversity, the team playing most of the match a man down BUT still winning.

Joelinton scoring a great composed goal just before the break, that topped an excellent man of the match display.

It was though of course the incident that caused NUFC to go down to 10 men that dominated debate.

Was the Fabian Schar sending off the correct decision?

Ben Brereton Diaz runs up behind Fabian Schar and shoves him to the ground.

Schar jumps up and there is a coming together, then BOTH players move their heads forward, the cheat though then humiliates himself by collapsing to the ground, to try and get Fabian Schar sent off.

This is what the two managers have had to say, Eddie Howe and Russell Martin with ‘slightly’ different views on the incident…

Southampton manager Russell Martin on the Ben Brereton Diaz and Fabian Schar incident:

“When he (Ben Brereton Diaz) stands still and then (Fabian Schar) leans with his head, you give someone the opportunity to make the most of it.

“I guarantee their players would have done the same.

“It is a moment of madness from their player.

“It is the reason we have VAR, to overturn decisions if they’re wrong.

“They’ve seen it back on numerous occasions in slow motion and that stuff.

“So it has to be a red card.”

How Eddie Howe saw it:

“I think it’s really harsh on Fabby.

“Although I think we all know that you can’t give the referee the possibility to even give the red card.

“It looks like he has been caught by a well-managed situation.

“It is something we will learn from.

“The red card was a turning point negatively in terms of control but a turning point in terms of getting the crowd in the game.

“They felt an injustice.

“Without that support it’s probably a different result.”
