Khaldoon Al Mubarak has spoken of his excitement ahead of this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup and says City are going to the USA to bring back the trophy!
City have been drawn against Wydad of Morocco, Abu Dhabi’s Al Ain and Italian giants Juventus in Group G, with the top two qualifying for the last-16.
The new 32-team tournament will see clubs from each of the six continental confederations play to win a beautiful new trophy crafted by luxury jeweller Tiffany & Co.
It is a tantalising prospect, with the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Boca Juniors, Inter Miami and River Plate battling for success at the inaugural event.
History beckons for all the sides competing in the first iteration of the new tournament, and Khaldoon wants to see City’s name in lights come the final on 13 July.
“This is a very, very serious competition,” he said. “In the summer, the whole world will be watching this. A big number of the top teams in the world will be competing in this tournament. And I can assure you, we're going to give it our best shot. We're going in there to win it.
“We're going to go and try to win this tournament. This is the beginning of the new season, not the continuation of last season. You know, we take some rest. The team will take the rest that they will take right now, and then they start pre-season and then immediately straight into the into the Club World Cup.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman has described the North Stand expansion and development of the £300m entertainment destination at the Etihad Stadium as ‘a gamechanger’ for the Club.
A ceremony earlier this month marked a significant milestone in the project as the Club celebrated ‘topping out’ - the installation of the final steel on site.
The topping out ceremony signifies the completion of the highest structural point of the development, which upon completion will increase the stadium’s capacity to more than 60,000, create a new covered 3000-capacity fan zone, and introduce a state-of-the-art museum experience.
The Chairman believes the project will have a lasting impacting on the football club.
“It's coming up very fast. Very, very fast,” he said. “It's going to be a great addition to the campus.
“I think the stand you will see, I think once we start the new season, I think everybody will start physically seeing it a lot clearer. The hotel is also coming up nicely.
“It's moving very, very, very fast. But we're happy with the contractors on the ground.
“This is going to be a game changer. You will see over these next 12 to 18 months.”
