Rogers was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal during the summer window, but the football world was stunned when Chelsea secured his signature for a quite frankly ridiculous fee.

Attaching a sell-on fee is now commonplace in football in case players go on to secure big-money moves, and that is exactly what the Teesside club did when selling Rogers, agreeing to 20 percent of any future fee.

It has been revealed that Boro received a world-record £21m sell-on from Rogers' move from Villa to Chelsea, according to Sky Sports, which is nearly triple what they sold him for.

Sky Sports adds that the 24-year-old is Middlesbrough's highest payment of the window, more than the guaranteed £18.5m Everton are paying for Hayden Hackney, which could rise to £25m.

Middlesbrough signed Rogers from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 for a mere £1.1m, highlighting the player's quick and remarkable rise.

While the Englishman began the 23/24 season as a consistent starter, his lack of impact meant he lost his place in Michael Carrick's side and had to settle for a place on the bench for 12 consecutive matches.

However, before Christmas, he went on a roll, making five Championship goal contributions in seven matches before his performance against the Villans in the FA Cup caught Unai Emery's eye.

Of course, everyone could see what a talent Rogers was at the Riverside, but given he spent just under seven months on Teesside, it makes Middlesbrough's profit even more unbelievable.

Given Boro's savvy business in the transfer market, it feels only a matter of time before another talent follows in Rogers' and Hackney's footsteps up to the Premier League.

The most obvious candidate to follow suit is new signing Will Lankshear, who has thrived at the Riverside since completing his initial £10m move plus add-ons from Tottenham.

The 21-year-old has already netted five goals in six Championship appearances as well as two in three in the Carabao Cup, placing him among the early contenders for the Golden Boot.

With England lacking in ready-made Harry Kane replacements, Lankshear is among a small cohort of English strikers with a shot at replacing him once he retires, and that will surely turn Premier League heads.

Elsewhere, Amario Cozier-Duberry and Ashley Phillips are intriguing young English prospects with high ceilings, although they will need time to develop.
