There’s one little Rangers concern about the return of Steven Gerrard

So as we have already reported, Ibrox Noise understands Steven Gerrard will indeed be the next Rangers manager, assuming all stipulations can be met.
We are not against Gerrard as boss, and we don’t wholeheartedly endorse it either.
We cautiously support and approve the appointment, but we have slight misgivings about Gerrard’s proposed backroom staff.
Ibrox Noise was on record previously as saying we were happy with Gerrard as boss but he’d absolutely need a good team under him. He is not a great tactician or coach, and he needs guys under him who are.
Aside the technical-minded Tom Culshaw who knows how to set the cones up, there isn’t a proper coach or tactician among the lot. Defoe, McAllister and Davis might know the game of football, but their coaching and tactical nous is risky.
To have those guys under him feels a bit more like him just appointing mates he trusts.
There is a case for Gary Mac – he was part of 55, as Culshaw was, but Davis and Defoe are just recently-retired players who are rookies in the coaching and management game.
We do like the Rangers-minded angle of Davis, he is a smart guy and deeply respected at Ibrox as well as in football. We’re not going to slaughter the choice alone.
But Gerrard seems to be picking his pals and guys he trusts, not necessarily a team who will be able to correctly advise and guide him on the decisions to make the players to pick or the tactics to choose.
As we reported in the past, Michael Beale’s role was coaching and tactics. He built the systems and Gerrard made the choices. He gave Gerrard all the options.
We’re not sure Tom Culshaw or the other three can do that.
This is not to say we want Beale back, but honestly the team Gerrard is putting together isn’t tactically proficient.
And it was our one concern, him having a team under him that could do the heavy lifting and do it well.
End of the day he’s 99% certain now so whatever he wants he’ll get.
Let’s hope the next Rangers manager is the right choice for the club.
