The Cityzens moved into pole position following last weekend’s 2-1 win at Everton. They will now be aiming to stay at the summit by defeating Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Manchester City boss Jeglertz admitted that moving to the top of table has provided his side with a boost but they are more focused on performing even better to stay there.
“It should be a boost and it definitely is,” Jeglertz said. “We haven’t spoken that much about it but it just shows us that we are a good team and we have had a great start so far. At the same time, we also know that we have only played a certain amount of games.
“When we are at the highest peak, we have shown that we are a very good football team. On the other hand, we are working hard every day to be a little bit better because we know that if we want to be in this position when the league ends, we still have parts that we would like to be better in.
“What I like about this group is that they are never satisfied. When we analyse after games, no matter how well we’ve performed, they always find things that they want to improve. That drive and ambition is going to make us even better all of the time.”
Derby opponents Manchester United also have title ambitions this season and Jeglertz sees The Red Devils as a certain contender.
He said “Yeah, they are a great team. I think they’ve done it well, not only in the Champions League but in the league too. They will definitely be competing with the other teams at the top of the league, they’re definitely a contender [for the title].”
Derby bragging rights are on the line this weekend but Jeglertz wants his side to enjoy the occasion rather than feel the heavy burden of pressure.
He said “You can’t underestimate how big it is. We need to live that and also, enjoy it when we play these kind of games. This is why they started playing football; to play in this game, to play a derby in this great stadium, in-front of their home fans. They need to enjoy it, that’ll be one of my key messages.
“The load on them will be tough but we will make sure they enjoy it. At the same time, they are playing the game, not the event, so we need to make sure that we are able to do the things that we are supposed to do and do it with determination. I’m sure we will be fine.”
Manchester City’s derby clash against Manchester United kicks-off at 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
