  • Rodri opened the door to a Real Madrid transfer in late-March
  • The Spain international insisted his Atletico Madrid history would not block a Real move
  • Manchester City remain determined to extend Rodri’s contract

Manchester City supporters should not be ‘getting too worried’ following the latest set of comments issued by Rodri over his Etihad Stadium future, according to one journalist.

The 29-year-old stole the headlines early on during the March international break, having been quizzed on his Manchester City career and the possibility of imminent transfer interest from Real Madrid during the coming summer market.

“At some point, we’ll have to sit down and talk,” Rodri said of his current contractual picture in the North-West. “Even though I’ve played for Atleti (Atletico Madrid), (Real) Madrid isn’t a closed door for me – you can’t turn your back on the best clubs,” he continued.

“Playing at the Bernabéu is always incredible, it’s very intimidating… I hadn’t planned to play outside of Spain but Manchester City came up (as an option in 2019). I would like to return to the Spanish league, I still follow it.

“The Premier (League) is my weakness but it is also a very demanding league. For now, I am very happy there.”

Rodri has only recent returned to top-level, consistent Manchester City availability having recovered from a hamstring problem that followed the conclusion of his recovery process from his 2024 ACL injury.

What are Man City’s Rodri plans?

Now, Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol has insisted Manchester City will ‘probably be pretty confident’ regarding a contract extension for Rodri, despite the Spaniard’s recent comments concerning a potential move to Real Madrid.

What Man City will try and do is have talks with his representatives and get him to agree to sign a new contract,” Solhekol explained this week. “You do have to remember he has had a serious knee injury, which he has been recovering from. That is one of the reasons there haven’t been in-depth talks about extending his contract.”

Solhekol continued, “It would’ve been easy to say he is on international duty and doesn’t want to talk about his club future. He said what privately a lot of players would say. It is very difficult to turn down a big club like Real Madrid if they come in for you.

“We have to retain a sense of perspective. Just because Real Madrid may want a player does not mean they will get him. We do know they are interested in signing a new midfielder this summer.

“I am sure Rodri is one of the players they will be looking at, they have also been linked with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo at Chelsea. They will have a lot of options.”

Should Manchester City fans be worried about Rodri’s future?

But concluding, Kaveh Solhekol had a message of reassurance for Manchester City supporters, “If I were a Man City fan, I wouldn’t be getting too worried. I think Man City do want to keep him and quietly, they are probably pretty confident they will get him to sign a new deal.”

It remains to be seen just how urgently Manchester City act over Rodri’s contract, and when they will aim to tie down the player to a long-term extension, should he indicate a willingness to commit his future to the club.

The feeling within the Etihad Stadium, according to reports elsewhere, is that Rodri has always been destined to return to Spanish football at some stage in his career, with a road map planned out by the player some years ago.

But given the player’s importance to the current and future project at the club, whether that be under Pep Guardiola or the Catalan’s successor, Manchester City will want to retain Rodri at all costs, and view him as a priority for contractual talks.

Other names that could see their contracts placed under review as a matter of urgency include Phil Foden, who will also see his deal expire at the end of the 2026/27 campaign, as things stand.
