Ahead of the decisive 8th and final matchday of the Champions League, a look at the players and coaches who have represented the colours of the club from the Principality and the Old Lady during their careers.
They have in common that they have played for both teams. Like Denis Zakaria and Paul Pogba, formerly of Juventus and currently in the AS Monaco squad, as well as Khephren Thuram, who came through the AS Monaco ranks, they are a total of 15 players and two coaches who have followed a similar path throughout their careers. So, before the meeting between the two clubs for Matchday 8 of the Champions League, let’s focus on them. Flashback 🎞️
Let’s go back in time to the 1950s to find a player who represented both teams. Initially playing for Monaco, where he scored 48 goals between 1951 and 1956, Raoul Conti then joined Juventus. A true pioneer in this regard, the Argentinian midfielder had to wait over 30 years for a successor in Rui Barros.

Having played 60 matches in Italy, this natural number 10 then signed for AS Monaco, where he showcased his exceptional talent on the ball, delighting his teammates with his passing. Having played for the club between 1990 and 1993, the Portugal international, who made 102 appearances in red and white, won the 1991 Coupe de France before reaching the final of the 1992 Cup Winners’ Cup, the Principality club’s first ever European final.

Although on the bench for this match, Lilian Thuram played a significant role in this remarkable run, appearing in four games at just 19 years of age. This was a clear sign of precocity for the central defender, a product of the Academy, who would go on to play a total of 193 matches between 1990 and 1996, before moving to Turin to play for Juventus from 2001 to 2006.

A journey that will inspire others Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, two more players from the Diagonale. After netting 28 and 62 times, respectively, in the 1990s, and two of the architects of the 1997 title triumph, the 1998 World champions – alongside Lilian Thuram – would subsequently join the Old Lady.
History repeated itself two decades later for Khephren Thuram, the son of Lilian. After growing up at the Academy, he played his first minutes in the Principality in 2018-2019, missing the chance to play alongside Morgan De Sanctis, the 2017 French champion, who played for Juventus between 1997 and 1999. Now with the Bianconeri, the France international has joined a long line of midfielders to have worn the jersey of both clubs, including Vladimir Jugović, Sergio Almiron, Denis Zakaria and Paul Pogba.

During Pogba’s first stint at Juventus between 2012 and 2016, the 2018 World Cup winner also played alongside Patrice Evra, who sported the Monaco colours between 2002 and 2006. In his four seasons, the former left-back won the 2003 Coupe de la Ligue, and was a finalist in the Champions League the following season under Didier Deschamps’ command.

The current French national team coach, after his time in Monaco between 2001 and 2005, successfully managed Juventus in 2006-2007, leading the Italian club back to Serie A. A similar feat was accomplished in 2013 by Claudio Ranieri, this time at AS Monaco. The man behind their return to the Champions League the following season, he had previously managed Juventus from 2007 to 2009.
