It’s a rumor no longer. Winger Nicolas Rodriguez is signed to the Orlando City SC roster. He’ll transfer as a U-22 Initiative player through 2027. The club has an option for 2028 that they’ll be exercising.
He comes from Fortaleza CEIF in the Liga BetPlay Dimayor, Colombia’s top tier. He made his professional debut in May 2022. Since then, he’s made 73 appearances, scoring 12 goals plus eight assists.
Rodriguez will immediately impact the Orlando City offense. When head coach Oscar Pareja faces situations where he needs someone to create chances and score a goal, the winger is a proven asset.
His offensive talent and accomplishments got the scouts started on his trail. Luiz Muzzi said all their reports proved that Rodriguez fits the Lions’ model and culture. The Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations and General Manager added that the player has a talented left foot that is difficult to defend.
Further, he has an eye for isolating defenders where he takes them on, one by one.
He’ll have to continue development in defense. He sees the pitch clearly when he’s attacking. He’ll soon learn to see those same elements when attackers run toward him.
Atlanta United scouts identified the Orlando City scheme as the South American Attack. It’s a system driven by aggression. The team works to control space. Teams using this method – whether in the Americas or Europe – attempt more dribbles as they work to maintain the middle of the pitch.
City averaged 6.9 dribbles per game during the 2024 regular season.
This is the scheme that Orlando City players used to drive the club from a disappointingly slow start to challenge for the MLS Championship.
Nicolas Rodriguez has the talent poised to explode in the MLS. That means Orlando City SC will do more than challenge for the championship. They have the tools and players to win it.
