Thiaw opened the scoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to give Eddie Howe's a half-time lead. Archie Gray levelled for the hosts, but Jacob Ramsey netted what proved to be the winner in the 68th minute with his first goal for the club.

That gave United a third Premier League away victory of the season, with the team and head coach celebrating together after the full-time whistle.

It ended a run of three straight defeats in the league. For Germany international defender Thiaw, it was a fourth goal of the season - here are some of his post-match thoughts:

On the vital victory...

"It's a huge, huge win, a huge three points for us, especially if you look at the last games. We were struggling, we have to be honest, but it's a huge win for us spiritually and mentally. We are really happy for this one. "First half, we played really good football - I think was one of our best halves this season. We created a lot, Tottenham didn't have a lot of chances. Second half, we didn't start well, but we kept fighting even after the scored. We showed really great willing to defend today as well.

"I told Tripps (Kieran Trippier) in the second half, 'what a great game!', even we were struggling. We just tried to enjoy it, even though they were creating some stuff. But I love to defend, we guys love to defend, the defenders, so sometimes it's good - as long as they don't score!"

On his goal...

"I wanted this goal! I think you could see, how I grabbed (Spurs midfielder Pape Matar Sarr to hold him off). I'm really happy for this goal."

On Ramsey's winner...

"Amazing. I was like, 'wow, he's really so happy.' I'm so happy for him.

"He's a great player, a great character for the for the team as well. We're really happy to have him, and I'm so glad that he scored his first goal for Newcastle."

On the travelling support...

"The fans, they've been always on top. They were always singing, they always support us. We just can be grateful for this kind of fans.

"You could see even the gaffer, he went in front and was celebrating with them. It means so much for us.

"I think they've been with us the whole time. They show us what you can do better. We're just a unit, in total, even if sometimes people think it's not like that, because the results were not there.

"But we've always always been together, and we'll stick together until the end of the season."
