Thijs Dallinga has suffered a cruciate ligament tear, and the 26-year-old FC Köln striker’s season now looks all but over.
He was injured on Saturday afternoon in a friendly against local rivals Viktoria Köln, and a few hours later the club confirmed the damage and that he will be out for several months. The player said in a post that he was struggling to accept it, calling it a nightmare come true, and vowed to return while backing the team.
Dallinga joined on loan from Bologna last summer. He made a dream Bundesliga debut on 29 August, coming on in the 66th minute and scoring twice as Köln turned a 1-2 deficit against TSG Hoffenheim into a 3-2 win.
He did not score in the next two matches in which he was available, so his season tally very likely stays at two goals.
It also leaves open the real possibility he has already played his last game for Köln, although the club hold an option to sign him permanently after this season.
The right-footed forward has one cap for the Netherlands, debuting on 21 November 2023 in a 0-6 European Championship qualifier win over Gibraltar.
