More DFB Pokal action continued on Wednesday with Bundesliga giants in action.

Reigning champions RB Leipzig were shockingly eliminated already, making way for a new champion.

Saarbrücken stun record champions

Bayern Munich were shockingly knocked out of the DFB Pokal in the second round by third-tier side Saarbrücken.

The record champions opened the scoring with ease via Thomas Müller, but immediately after the veteran’s low drive from outside the box, it wasn’t a walk in the park for the visitors.

Minutes after the goal, Thomas Tuchel suffered a huge blow as Matthijs De Ligt was forced off, and he’s reportedly injured his MCL. That left Kim Min-jae the only available centre-back with midfielder Joshua Kimmich forced to help out.

The Dutchman’s absence proved a game-changer as Saarbrücken equalised right before the break.

Frans Krätzig was stripped of the ball, and the hosts glid through Bayern’s defence before a wide-open Patrick Sontheimer turned things level, and the stadium erupted.

Saarbrücken’s confidence surged after the break and Tuchel’s big names off the bench couldn’t help. Goalkeeper Tim Schreiber, in particular, made two huge saves to deny Kingsley Coman while Harry Kane remained an unused sub.

Then, as the magic of the cup goes, Tim Civeja set up a late counterattack and Marcel Gaus raced into the box and slammed home to win it with seconds remaining.

It is the first time in exactly 23 years that Bayern were eliminated against a team from League Three or lower (November 1, 2000 v 1. FC Magdeburg).

Reus the hero as BVB survive

Borussia Dortmund’s veteran star rose to the occasion once again as the hosts scrapped into the next round against Hoffenheim.

Marco Reus perfectly scooped the ball into the top right corner after the ball was drilled into the box just before the break for his fourth goal this season.

But don’t let the scoresheet fool you, as BVB stars Gio Reyna and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens were vital in the build-up, with Youssoufa Moukoko and Nico Schlotterbeck also having solid showings over 90 minutes.

Edin Terzic won’t be happy with such a low-scoring affair, which allowed the visitors an opportunity to potentially strike back.

Without the likes of Andrej Kramarić, however, Hoffenheim only registered six efforts to BVB’s 22 and were eliminated in the second round. And to rub salt in the wound, Ozan Kabak was shown a red card in the dying moments.

Dortmund are the only team to reach the Round of 16 in each of the last 13 DFB Pokal seasons and are currently unbeaten in 26 home games across all competitions. Their longest streak in 21 years and three shy of a new club record.
