Ian Wright singled out Myles Lewis-Skelly for praise after Mikel Arteta opted to leave him on the bench for the Carabao Cup final.

The youngster watched on from the sidelines at Wembley as Arsenal slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.

What did the pundits have to say about Lewis-Skelly’s omission?

It comes amid Lewis-Skelly being heavily linked with Manchester United while he navigates an uncertain situation at the Emirates.

When analysing the weekend’s affairs in his former club’s clash, Wright told the Stick to Football panel in Thursday’s episode: “Myles Lewis-Skelly, when he played against Real Madrid last season, he had an unbelievable game, and then he’s kind of been dropped back out of it.

“And I’m thinking in that game on Sunday (the Carabao Cup final), [having] a left-back who can invert… we needed somebody comfortable on the ball, which we didn’t have. That’s the game he should be playing, because he’s someone who can get on the ball and link [up play].

“This guy is a footballer, and we needed a footballer on Sunday.“

Jamie Carragher chimed in: “He is a good player. What he did last season was unbelievable – that performance against Real Madrid was like.. he’s going to go on and do special things on the back of that at 18, 19 [years old].”

How Lewis-Skelly is faring this term

This season, the full-back has had to grow accustomed to playing a reduced role following a stellar breakout campaign in 2024/2025.

By the end of the term, Lewis-Skelly had cemented a starting spot and racked up a hugely valuable 23 Premier League appearances and 1,371 minutes of action in the top flight.

However, the addition of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen and the consistent form of Riccardo Calafiori have meant that the 19-year-old is fighting an uphill battle to reclaim his place.

Arteta has given him the nod only once in the league this campaign, while he’s left him on the bench for a whopping 16 games, with Lewis-Skelly’s last outing coming on January 8 against Liverpool.

It remains to be seen if the Gunners would be willing to part ways with their academy graduate, who’s been on the books for 11 years in North London.

When Sky Sports verified United’s interest in Lewis-Skelly, journalist Danyal Khan reported that Arsenal would have to facilitate player sales if they were to sign their top targets in the window.
