FC Bayern reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup with a commanding 2-0 win over RB Leipzig. Sporting director Max Eberl was suitably satisfied after the game in the mixed zone – but demonstratively kept his head down despite all the euphoria
„We are in all three competitions. We wanted to have a compact March, now we have a compact March with the Champions League round of 16 and the cup semi-finals. We are extremely proud,“ explained Eberl after the final whistle. The record champions are therefore still represented at all levels – championship, premier league and cup. For the 50-year-old, this is no coincidence, but an expression of his own aspirations: „You start all three competitions to win them.“
And yet Eberl did not want to get caught up in excessive triple euphoria. „Step by step. If you keep looking too far ahead, you can quickly stumble,“ he warned. The next focus is already on everyday life in the Bundesliga, specifically the away game in Bremen. „We play in Bremen in three days, an away game that we want to win. We also want to keep the league going now.“
In sporting terms, Eberl described the victory as a mature performance. He was particularly impressed by the second half. „In the second half, it really was a knockout game, the way you have to play,“ he emphasised. They stayed calm, created chances, kept going – until the 1:0 penalty and later the 2:0 were finally scored. „That’s how you play knockout games,“ he summed it up
In the first half, the team took control after around 20 minutes and created good opportunities. Overall, it was a match of equals, but one in which you could feel your own dominance
Eberl also took a clear stance on the controversial scene surrounding a possible penalty for Leipzig. For him, it was „a clear offside foul and therefore not a penalty“. He did not want to fuel discussions about VAR interventions any further
There was special praise for Aleksandar Pavlovic. „Incredibly active player, unbelievably long distances that he makes,“ enthused Eberl. The midfielder is „the machine that runs, that does, that makes“ and sometimes almost gets lost in all the goals scored by the attacking players. However, Pavlovic is currently „in very, very good form“
Eberl also praised the defense around Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah, saying that the one-nil game was no coincidence, as both communicated a lot and defended very well against Leipzig’s dangerous attacking forces
The bottom line is that it was an evening that gave them confidence – without losing sight of reality. FC Bayern are represented in all three competitions. And Max Eberl is making sure that justified pride does not turn into complacency. Step by step – that’s the route at Säbener Straße.
