The league season has begun for MLS Next Pro. Atlanta United FC has started the season with a draw and then victory in the opening part of the season. One player who may be emerging as a leader and strong player is on their roster.
Forward Liam Butts has been playing unrelentingly on the offensive end, and it seems to be paying off for Atlanta. His ability on the offensive end led to their first goal of the season in the opening draw against New England.
Butts was able to help lead a surge after their first victory following the draw. It could be important for Atlanta for them to maintain an offense that can bring about the attack as the season continues on.
He had spent the last few years with New England. He had 16 goals in two seasons and was a huge pickup by Atlanta. Now in the early parts of the season, the signing of the Penn State grad seems to have been paying off.
The Penn State grad had 25 goals while playing for the Nittany Lions and was a sought-after soccer player upon graduating. He has yet to make an MLS roster, but his play should continue to draw interest from the main league.
While he may still be looking for a chance, Atlanta would be hard pressed to find a more relenting forward on the pitch. If he continues to put pressure the way he has at the beginning of the season it could lead to more opportunities for goals and victories.
Atlanta is looking to rebound after a rough 2025 season. They finished in 10th place a year ago and have yet to qualify for the postseason.
A get such as Butts could finally put them in position for a playoff berth, something that the organization is coveting and it would be a great moment for the team if they can breakthrough.
The reason that Butts pursuit led to a goal was that he would not give up. It led to an own goal by the goalie but signals a possible change for Atlanta. Now as they have yet to lose this season it could be looking more and more like the team may that right call-in signing Butts.
This Sunday they will look to stay unbeaten against Huntsville. You can be sure that Butts will be continuing to find the back of the net.
