April 20-26 has given Lazio two Coppa Italia finals, a derby victory and notable wins over Milan, plus a salute to Luigi Polentes.
According to The Laziali, 1984 brought a 3-2 home win over Napoli, Giordano striking early before a Laudrup brace. In 1995 Lazio beat Roma 2-0 through Casiraghi and Signori. In 2009, Zarate and Kolarov earned a 2-1 semi-final win at Juventus to reach the Coppa Italia final.
In 2019, Correa struck in the second half at San Siro as Milan lost 0-1 and Lazio advanced to the final. In 2021, the Argentine hit a brace in a 3-0 win over Milan at the Olimpico.
The standout came in 1973, a top-of-the-table clash with Milan. Lazio, second on 37 points to Milan’s 39 after seven straight wins, led on five minutes when Chinaglia’s drive deflected off Schnellinger. After a brief stoppage, he smashed a 35th-minute free-kick for 2-0, injuring keeper Belli, who was replaced by Vecchi.
Rivera halved the deficit on 56 after Bigon dispossessed Chinaglia. Chiarugi later found the net but was flagged offside on 89, and coach Nereo Rocco was sent off. It finished 2-1, Lazio’s eighth straight win, drawing level with Milan on 39 with Juventus on 37 and four to play.
We remember defender Luigi Polentes, born 12 October 1944 in San Giacomo di Veglia. Joining Lazio in 1969, he won the 1971 Cup of the Alps, helped secure 1972 promotion and was part of the 1974 title squad. He made 144 appearances for the club, scoring once, before departing in 1977.
After football he became a winegrower near Treviso and remained active with Vittorio Veneto’s former players. Luigi Polentes died on 21 April 2011 in Vittorio Veneto.
