Lazio won the Coppa Italia by beating Milan 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico, the first trophy of the Cragnotti era in 1998. According to The Laziali, this week, from 27 April to 3 May, is rich with landmark fixtures.
Among the week’s notable games: in 2001 it finished Roma 2-2 Lazio after Lucas Castromán’s stoppage-time leveller. In 2017 Lazio won 3-1 at Roma, Keita Balde netting twice with Basta also on target, and in 2016 they beat Inter 2-0 thanks to Klose and a late Candreva penalty.
Milan had taken the first leg 1-0 at San Siro on 8 April, George Weah scoring after Sebastiano Rossi’s long clearance and a defensive mix-up, despite Lazio dominance.
In front of 70,000, including 7,000 travelling fans, Lazio were without Matias Almeyda, Beppe Pancaro, José Chamot and Alen Boksic, while Milan missed Leonardo and Zvonimir Boban. Nedved and Casiraghi went close, Savicevic departed injured for Patrick Kluivert, and it was 0-0 at half-time.
Early in the second half Demetrio Albertini’s free-kick, after Alessandro Grandoni’s foul, made it 0-1 and left Lazio needing three. Giampiero Maini replaced Kluivert, then sub Guerino Gottardi equalised from Roberto Mancini’s pass before Vladimir Jugovic converted a penalty for a Paolo Maldini foul on Gottardi.
Alessandro Nesta swept in for 3-1 after Rossi parried Paolo Negro’s shot. Milan threw on Maurizio Ganz and Christian Ziege tested Luca Marchegiani, then Diego Fuser and Marcel Desailly saw red. Jugovic missed a late header and the whistle sealed Lazio’s first trophy in 24 years.
This week also remembers Maurilio Prini, who scored the 1958 final winner against Fiorentina under Fulvio Bernardini, delivering Lazio’s first silverware. He died on 29 April 2009.
