According to The Laziali, this week in history features two derby triumphs, late winners against Fiorentina and Inter, and a salute to first manager Guido Baccani.
Highlights include Lazio beating Roma 2-1 in 1951, easing past Galatasaray 3-1 in 2016, overcoming Parma 2-0 in 2005, a 3-2 comeback at Genoa in 1993, and Negro’s stoppage time strike in 1997 to beat Fiorentina 1-0.
Match in focus, 26 February 1978, Lazio 1-0 Inter: in relentless rain at the Olimpico, Lazio were without Pietro Ghedin and Vincenzo D’Amico, with Ciccio Cordova banned, so Vinicio stationed Bruno Giordano behind Renzo Garlaschelli and Sergio Clerici. Garella thwarted Scanziani, Clerici hit the frame, and Bordon denied Anastasi and Giordano before the interval.
Lazio took charge after the break. Bordon tipped a Giordano header onto the bar and kept out Badiani and Clerici, while referee Sergio Gonella sparked confusion by wrongly flagging offside then restarting with a dropped ball.
In the 87th minute Boccolini’s second cross caused chaos, Bordon spilled, Giordano and Garlaschelli were stopped on the line, and Clerici finally forced it home for 1-0. It was the last goal by a foreign player in Italy until clubs could sign foreigners again in 1980.
Baccani, born in Rome on 6 April 1882, joined Lazio in 1900 and became technical director, coach and general secretary. He led early regional champions, reached national finals in 1913 and 1914, later became a Cavaliere and Italy selector, briefly coached Roma in 1929, and died on 4 March 1938. In 1948 he was named a Pioneer of Italian Football by the FIGC.
