Harry Kane spoke after the cup win at Union Berlin. The Englishman had clear words about the game, the performance – and the penalty whistles.

FC Bayern took the next step towards the title in the floodlit duel with Union Berlin. Vincent Kompany’s team did not let two goals conceded and difficult pitch conditions put them off their stride. „This win means a lot to us – this has not been a good competition for us in recent years,“ said Kane after the 3-2 victory in the DFB Cup round of 16.

The 32-year-old saw the performance as an important step in his development: „I think that was the next step we needed. We dominate a lot of games. But this was a game where we needed to show more character and cohesion. We did that very well.“

According to Kane, the reactions after the final whistle underlined the importance of the win: „You could see from our celebrations that it was an important moment for our season. We’re still in all three competitions in the new year, which is great for building momentum.“

He was critical of the two penalty decisions: „When you have a game with 100 aerial duels, I don’t understand the decision. Both penalties were harsh to be honest.“

Munich got off to the better start and took the lead through an own goal from Benedict Ansah. Only a short time later, Kane increased the lead to 2:0 with a header. Union were able to reduce the deficit through Leopold Querfeld with a penalty, but another own goal – this time from Diogo Leite – restored the gap before the break.

The handball penalty for Union came about after Jonathan Tah touched the ball with his arm during a throw-in by the hosts. Referee Martin Petersen initially allowed play to continue, but corrected the decision after VAR intervention and an on-field review.

Union were also awarded a penalty in the second half, this time after a tackle in the penalty area between Kane and Jeong. Petersen judged the Bayern striker’s challenge to be a foul with his elbow. Querfeld stepped up again and also converted the second penalty safely. No further goals were scored.

The hosts threw everything forward in the final phase, but the equalizer failed to materialize. FC Bayern are therefore back in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time since the 2022/23 season. The draw will take place on Sunday and the match will be played in February 2026.
