Thomas Bramall, under scrutiny for contentious calls in Leeds United’s 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, will be fourth official for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Arsenal.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the referee endured a difficult afternoon at Selhurst Park, most notably dismissing Gabriel Gudmundsson for two bookings, the second considered soft.

Gudmundsson and Ismaila Sarr collided on halfway and Bramall quickly produced a yellow, seemingly overlooking the defender’s earlier caution until Palace players and fourth official Paul Tierney reminded him. He then did not show a second yellow to Palace wing-back Brennan Johnson after tripping James Justin to halt a counter, the wing-back’s fourth foul.

Bramall did award Leeds a penalty for a Will Hughes handball, and his assistant correctly ruled out a Jefferson Lerma strike for offside. For Sunday he will work alongside referee Peter Bankes, assistants Neil Davies and Steve Meredith, and VAR John Brooks, and will not take domestic league duties this weekend as standard procedure.

The Selhurst Park decisions have sparked debate. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher argued the red card for Gudmundsson was correct and that Johnson should have stayed on, while Daniel Farke highlighted what he saw as inconsistency between the two calls.

Jarred Gillett will referee Brentford’s visit to Elland Road on Saturday night, with Simon Long and Nick Greenhalgh as assistants, Anthony Backhouse as fourth official and Matt Donohue on VAR.
