Thomas Bramall will be fourth official for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Arsenal, days after his contentious display in Leeds United’s 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, he will work with referee Peter Bankes, assistants Neil Davies and Steve Meredith, and VAR John Brooks, and is off domestic league duties this weekend as standard.

At Selhurst Park he faced heavy scrutiny, notably for dismissing Leeds left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson for two bookings, the second considered soft.

Gudmundsson and Ismaila Sarr collided on halfway and Bramall quickly showed a yellow, appearing to forget he had already cautioned the Swede, before Palace players and fourth official Paul Tierney intervened.

He then declined to show a second yellow to Palace wing-back Brennan Johnson after he tripped James Justin to halt a counter, his fourth foul. Bramall did award Leeds a penalty for a Will Hughes handball, and an assistant correctly ruled out a Jefferson Lerma goal for offside.

The decisions have prompted debate, with former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher arguing Gudmundsson was correctly sent off and Johnson should have stayed on. Others disagreed, and Daniel Farke criticised what he saw as inconsistency between the two calls.
