Thomas Frank has backed Brennan Johnson to make an impact for Spurs this season after a frustrating spell for the forward.
Despite the plaudits from Frank, Johnson, Tottenham’s top scorer last season, has not started in the Premier League since their third match of the season against Bournemouth which Spurs lost 1-0.
Frank brought on the Welshman for the last 20 minutes in midweek during their 0-0 draw with Monaco, where Johnson had a great chance to win the match in the final few minutes but saw his effort blocked.
Even though the ball did not hit the back of the net, the winger still earned praise from his manager after the performance.
“I think one of Brennan’s big strengths is the ability to arrive in the right areas,” Frank said. “That’s a key strength, and the ability to score goals is quite good.
“I agree, I think he was positive when he came on the pitch. I think he had the biggest chance we had.
“He arrived in some good areas, he also worked hard in the recovery runs which he needs to do. So, yes, that is his key strength.”
Thomas Frank’s side have been criticised by Spurs fans and pundits for their lack of creativity so far this season.
But Frank defended his team selection when asked about this: “I want to play with high intensity and big aggressiveness, and in the Premier League you need physicality,” he said.
“So you need to have a certain level of physicality in the team. If you don’t have that, you have no chance. If you look at the three big boys right now, look at Liverpool, Arsenal and City, all of them have unbelievable physicality.
“Then you need some players that can make the difference, and you need to set up the structure that makes sure we play free-flowing football as much as possible.”
Cristian Romero is set to miss Spurs’ match against Everton through an adductor injury and the Dane explained how important he is for Spurs.
“I think Cuti is a top central defender in every aspect,” he said. “As a leader, as a defender, and as a, playmaker is maybe a big word, but as a player that helps the team building from the back.”
