As Tottenham Hotspur look to pick up just their third home win of the Premier League season, Thomas Frank has addressed the intense speculation over his future in north London.
Perhaps crucially, the Dane believes he has the support of the Spurs hierarchy, “I feel supported,” Frank said. I have felt that the whole time. My mind has not changed. We are building. I’ve said it many times, I am most critical of myself, but we have a lot of people that need to perform.”
Frank also noted that it will take a collective movement to effect a turnaround in form at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “I’m very comfortable and confident that I will fix it, but it is not just me. When this club comes out on top, there will be many good people working together and aligned for years. If you want success, you need the right people aligned at the right time.”
Spurs looked like they were building some momentum following consecutive wins against Brentford and Slavia Prague, but this was thoroughly halted after they were comprehensively beaten by Nottingham Forest. The 52-year-old was asked to reflect on the performance now that he had been able to analyse it in more detail.
“It was a bad performance. No two ways about it.” Frank said. “We lacked the energy to produce again. That was one element. Mistakes happen in football, and we struggled to come back from that. There’s always something to learn. To learn about the players, the team.”
One player who made a notable mistake in the game was youngster Archie Gray, but his manager believes that he showed a good mentality despite putting in a below-par performance.
“He’s been good. He wanted the ball back instantly after the mistake. I like that mentality. Everyone who has played football at this level has made a mistake.”
Arne Slot, Frank’s opponent in the dugout on Saturday, has also been under pressure in recent weeks as his Liverpool side has underperformed thus far.
But Frank was very complimentary of the Reds, who have been in much better form of late. “They are an excellent team,” he said. “They are the champions. They started well. They have great players. Ekitike, Isak, Wirtz, and one of the best midfields in the league last year. It is a very good team, but I know we can compete at a high level and compete very well.”
Both sides desperately need three points to get their campaigns back on track, which should make for an interesting match-up on Saturday evening. Spurs could drop to as low as 15th place in the top flight if they fail to pick up any points.
