Tottenham Hotspur held AS Monaco to a 0-0 draw in the Champions League last night.
They enjoyed a decent first half but were obliterated after the break The hosts recorded 23 shots and should have won the game.
However, Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario delivered a fantastic performance to earn his side a point and keep their unbeaten Champions League record intact (W1, D2).
According to Squawka, based on the quality of the shots the Spurs star faced, he prevented 2.68 goals against Monaco.
Vicario is just one of four goalies to make eight (or more) saves and keep a clean sheet in a Champions League game for an English side in the last ten seasons, after Alisson Becker, Nick Pope and David De Gea.
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank praised the Italian international, who had come under fire for some poor goalkeeping performances this season, especially the recent loss to Aston Villa.
Frank said (via Tottenham’s official website), “Yeah, I think the two goals against Villa, I don’t think it’s like mistakes, or I don’t think it’s any of that, just two great finishes, but what I would say, and as you said, I think he was very good today.
“I think some of the saves were exceptional tonight, and it’s a big part why we got a hard-fought point, but at the end of the day it can be a crucial point.”
Vicario must build on this display and make it his new benchmark.
His shot-stopping heroics in Monaco showed what he’s capable of when fully focused and confident. Consistency will define his season.
With crucial fixtures looming against Newcastle United, Everton, Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal, Tottenham need Vicario at his very best.
