Germany came from behind to draw 1-1 with Spain in a crucial game for their chances of qualifying out of their group. In what was an intriguing tactical battle, Alvaro Morata opened the scoring in the 62nd minute and after replacing Thomas Müller, Niclas Füllkrug scored his maiden World Cup goal to secure a point for Germany.
Müller was placed in the number nine position for Germany and struggled to impact the game before being replaced in the 70th minute. It was a similar performance to his Japan display where he struggled to impact the game. Müller has not played a full 90 minutes of football since Bayern Munich beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 at the end of September due to the attacking midfielder dealing with several injuries.
On the team’s performance, Müller said: “The 1-1 feels good, we played against a very good Spain side. It wasn’t the best of our games footballing wise, but we threw everything into the balance. Despite everything we still have a chance to qualify. We now have to beat Costa Rica and hope other results favour us.”
Germany’s final game is against Costa Rica on Thursday. It is a must-win game for Hansi Flick’s men as anything but a win will mean they will be heading home early for the second World Cup in a row.
