Thomas Partey was targeted by boos in Boston and snubbed in the pre-match handshake by England’s Djed Spense during the World Cup meeting between England and Ghana.
According to Superdeporte, the Ghana midfielder’s tournament has been overshadowed by a pending court case over an alleged sexual assault during his time at Arsenal, and Canada barred his entry for Ghana’s opening match.
He was available for the second game in Boston against England, where home supporters booed him repeatedly, notably when his name was read over the public address system.
Tension spiked in the line-up handshake. After greeting several Ghana players, Spense put his hand in his pocket as Partey approached, then took it out once the Ghanaian had passed. The rest of the England team completed the gesture.
The match finished 0-0. Afterwards, Partey said he did not know Spense’s motive and did not wish to give it attention, adding that football is about respect and focusing on the game. He said he had no issue with anyone and wished the full-back well.
