A familiar face from Kaizer Chiefs' storied past has cast an approving eye over the team's current defensive line. Thomas Sweswe, a former central defender who once stood firm in the heart of the Amakhosi defence, has seen enough to be genuinely excited.

From his vantage point, the current backline possesses all the ingredients to dominate the league. Sweswe didn't hesitate to bestow high praise, stating that this group has the clear potential to become the most formidable defensive unit in the entire competition.

He sees something special beginning to crystallize—a new central defensive partnership that is starting to display the kind of understanding and solidity that fans haven't seen since the glory days of the legendary Erick "Tower" Mathoho and Tefu Mashamaite. In this new pairing, Sweswe believes the Glamour Boys may have finally found a worthy successor to that iconic duo.

What exactly did Sweswe say?

Thomas Sweswe's conviction in the current Kaizer Chiefs defence isn't just a passing comment; it's a belief grounded in what he observes as a transformative connection. In a conversation with FARPost, the former stalwart elaborated on his high praise, pinpointing the source of his optimism.

For Sweswe, the path to having the league's most impenetrable defence this season is clear. He credits the remarkable synergy developing between the defenders, specifically highlighting the significant strides made by the central pairing of Zitha Kwinika and Edmilson Dove. He sees them evolving into a truly formidable unit.

“To become the best defence in the league, they’ll need to step up their game and consistently keep opponents from scoring. There was Mathoho and Mashamaite, so they are not far from that,” said the ex-Amakhosi star.

He identified this improved relationship as the crucial element that was absent in the previous campaign. According to Sweswe, the current understanding between Kwinika and Dove is the team's defensive cornerstone. He envisions them as a dual-pillar system at the back, a source of strength and leadership that propels the entire team forward.

“Every team starts play from the back, and the relationship that is between the centre-backs right now is in a better state than last season. I think that was the missing link last season. They [Kwinika and Miguel] seem to be understanding each other better. They now have that right bond to keep out any threat.

“It’s like having two captains, two leaders in the heart of your defence. Obviously, they will push the team from the back.”

His praise didn't stop with the central duo. Sweswe was also quick to acknowledge the vital role of the flanks, commending the wing-backs for their dynamism and the substantial value they contribute to shoring up the team's defensive line.

“But I can’t take away anything from the wing-backs, they are very mobile and they add so much to the team’s back-line.”
