The debate surrounding Thomas Tuchel, Trent Alexander-Arnold and England national team has taken a sharper edge, with the national manager delivering a candid message that reflects both clarity and consequence.

Tuchel has confirmed that Alexander-Arnold must accept his current omission, a decision that has stirred discussion across the England landscape. The Real Madrid full-back finds himself on the periphery, effectively seventh in the right-back hierarchy, a striking fall given his pedigree and technical influence.
“I know that it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out,” Tuchel said.
“We had a call. I tried to explain the situation but he just has to accept it.”

England’s expanded 35-man squad signals Tuchel’s intent to explore depth and consistency. The selections of Tino Livramento, Jarell Quansah and Djed Spence point to a preference for players who have recently contributed within the camp structure.

Injuries to Reece James opened a window, yet Alexander-Arnold remains outside the core group. Ezri Konsa offers versatility, while Ben White’s recall underlines Tuchel’s trust in players who have demonstrated form and familiarity in recent fixtures.
“The choice was for Ben White because I saw him play here in the cup final against Man City. He played the Champions League match before and was straight away back to his old self.”

“It was a chance for me to meet him in person, see how he interacts with the group. I think I know what Trent gives us so the choice was for Ben and for Tino Livramento on the right side.”
Tuchel’s explanation carries the tone of a manager prioritising cohesion over reputation. He has leaned towards continuity, rewarding those who have built rhythm across recent international windows.
“Just a choice,” Tuchel explained.
“A sportive choice and a difficult choice and maybe a hard choice. Maybe to a certain degree unfair but these choices have to be made.”
“To stick with the guys who actually had the good camps with us in September, October, November. They also need the minutes, there are a lot of players in this position, Djed Spence as well, who fight for a ticket. I didn’t want to leave them out.”

Such remarks reveal a selection policy rooted in collective development rather than individual status.
For Alexander-Arnold, the implications are significant. Despite returning from injury and establishing himself at Real Madrid, his international prospects have stalled. He has made only one appearance under Tuchel, a brief cameo against Andorra, and has now been omitted from four consecutive squads.

England’s right-back position has evolved into one of the most competitive areas in the squad. Even with established names like Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier no longer central to the picture, opportunities remain scarce.
The message from Tuchel is firm and unambiguous. Selection is earned through recent contribution and alignment with the current system. For Alexander-Arnold, the path back into the England fold demands patience, resilience and, perhaps above all, acceptance.
