New England manager Thomas Tuchel reportedly had a “verbal agreement” to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

October’s international break is approaching its conclusion, and Ten Hag appears to have survived the sack.

The Red Devils entered the international break on a five-game winless run, intensifying pressure on INEOS to axe the Dutch coach. Accordingly, the period saw United being linked with several top managers, including Tuchel.

Last week, The Peoples Person relayed a Manchester Evening News report claiming United are “lining up” the German coach as a potential replacement for Ten Hag.

The former PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich man emerged on the Mancunian side’s radar over the summer and was seen as the top candidate for the position at Old Trafford should it become available.

Tuchel has now been named the new manager of England, ending any possibility of taking charge of United this season. However, it appears he was very close to bagging the job in recent days.

According to the Manchester Evening News “an external source suggested Tuchel had a verbal agreement to take over at United.” However, club figures have denied the suggestion.

The FA reportedly knew of United’s interest as it is claimed they accelerated their plans to appoint Tuchel “amid renewed interest from United this month.”

Before settling on the Champions League winning manager, the FA also allegedly spoke to Graham Potter, who has been linked with United too.

But they decided against advancing talks with Potter and other potential homegrown candidates as they did not “believe there was a stellar English option.”

With the 51-year-old out of the picture now, the Premier League giants may face the same predicament in their search for Ten Hag’s replacement should the ex-Ajax manager fail to steady the ship.

It is claimed that Ten Hag will be shown the exit door if United lose their next two fixtures against Brentford and Fenerbahce.
