Former Chelsea winger Salomon Kalou has named one key element Chelsea are missing from their project and squad build right now.

Kalou, who enjoyed a successful spell at the club between 2006 and 2012, gaining over 200 appearances for The Blues, has been speaking out this week on what he believes are the problems that Chelsea are facing under this ownership and through this project they have put together.

Everyone knows now how Chelsea operate. They buy mostly just young players and put them on long contracts. This way of moving has been criticised a lot and has often just been seen as a way to make profits. Many Chelsea fans have grown frustrated with this way of recruiting, and now, Kalou has honed in on it as well.

Salomon Kalou scores for Chelsea

Kalou believes Chelsea lack the experience that his Chelsea side did, speaking to SuperSport unplugged: “We have a young squad. Our best player is 22 or 23 I think Cole Palmer. He’s supposed to be the leader.

“In my time at Chelsea, I was the youngest with Obi Mikel I was 20, he was 18. You had players like Ballack the captain of Germany, Drogba the captain Ivory Coast, John Terry, Frank Lampard,” Kalou continued.

“They held the dressing room, they helped us grow and the team. So if you have that in the team it’s easier to build on that. Chelsea recruit a lot of young players who are handed a contract for seven years.

“But then how do you, once it’s not working, how do you sell them? Those are the problems Chelsea are facing at the moment because they need to keep the players for longer as well to build up a team.”
