FC Bayern beat RB Leipzig to advance to the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. FCBinside provides three insights into the match

The Munich side struggled at first, but won their quarter-final 2-0 in the end. The game provided the following insights

1. Bayern are ready for the treble

The treble dream is alive and well at FC Bayern. The teams that have won the league, Champions League and DFB Cup in one season have become legends. In recent years, this dream has usually been shattered relatively early on in the season, with the DFB Cup always being the first sticking point. Bayern last made it to the final in Berlin in the 2019/20 season

After beating Leipzig, Munich are in the semi-finals and can now face Leverkusen, Stuttgart or Freiburg. Reaching the final and winning the cup seem anything but unrealistic. In the Bundesliga, Bayern have recovered after the slip-ups against Augsburg and in Hamburg. In the Champions League, coach Vincent Kompany’s team played a dominant league phase and only lost at Arsenal FC. Bayern will be favourites in most of the top-flight clashes

Sporting director Max Eberl summed it up after the home win against RB: „We are in all three competitions. We wanted to have a compact March, now we have a compact March with the Champions League round of 16 and the cup semi-finals. We are extremely proud,“ he said. He continued: „You start all three competitions to win them.“

However, Eberl also warned against too much euphoria at this stage: „Step by step. If you keep looking too far ahead, you can quickly stumble.“

2. Those days of Diaz being a chance killer are over

It quickly became clear that Luis Diaz was an absolute top transfer for FC Bayern. But there was one major flaw at the start of the season: the Colombian, who joined from Liverpool FC, missed numerous big chances and earned himself a reputation as a chance killer. But those days are over now

Diaz has recently scored crucial goals – such as the goal that made it 2-0 against RB, when Diaz finished off a powerful assist from Michael Olise. Diaz had previously put Bayern 2-2 ahead in Hamburg. He scored a treble in the 5-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim and was Man of the Match. He scored for the third game in a row against Leipzig

Bayern president Herbert Hainer had to publicly row back after the game because of a saying at the Oktoberfest: „I remember saying at the Oktoberfest that we are unbeatable if Luis Diaz scores goals,“ he said: „That was meant as a joke, but it really is true.“

Diaz also received plenty of praise from his team-mates afterwards. Harry Kane, who had put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot, was delighted with Diaz: „He also scores dirty goals, not just glamorous ones.“ Joshua Kimmich was downright enthusiastic: „His footballing joy is infectious. It’s fun. I get the feeling with him that he’s happy to play soccer every three days. That’s really cool.“

3. Diomande is one for Bayern

The visitors from Leipzig held their own for a long time in the Allianz Arena. Baumgartner scored once for the Red Bull club, but was just offside, which is why the goal did not count. RB would also have liked a penalty after a foul by Josip Stanisic on Antonio Nusa

Yan Diomande was the most eye-catching player in the Leipzig team. The attacking player from the Ivory Coast was deployed on the right by coach Ole Werner, with Diomande often playing on the left. The 19-year-old made life difficult for his opposite number Alphonso Davies. Diomande was strong, technically very gifted and, at 1.80 metres tall, surprisingly physically robust for a winger

When Leipzig’s management brought Diomande over from CD Leganes in the Spanish second division, they proved to have a very good nose. The youngster has already scored 14 points in 23 competitive games for RB. Diomande is causing a stir in Germany and this has naturally not escaped the attention of Bayern bosses. Diomande is said to be very high up on Munich’s list

Diomande’s performance against FCB underlined that he is one for Bayern: he was almost unstoppable by the FCB defense and his dribbling caused problems for the entire back line – not just Davies

A transfer of Diomande would not be an easy undertaking: his strong performances make him sought-after by top teams throughout Europe, while Leipzig are likely to want at least 100 million euros for him. There is also currently confusion surrounding a consultancy contract from the past, which would complicate negotiations

Nevertheless, Bayern should give it a try. With his qualities and enormous potential, Diomande would be an excellent fit for the record champions‘ squad.
