Lee Grant will appoint Walsall's new captain before next season, with Alex Pattison, Albert Adomah and Sven Sprangler in contention.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, former skipper Jamille Matt was among 12 players released with Aden Flint and Brandon Comley. With more signings still to be made, the armband could yet go to a new arrival.
Pattison appears the clearest option. He impressed during a poor second half and brings promotion know-how from Bradford City. He will be eager to hit the ground running next season, though injuries remain a concern after absences in defeats at Swindon Town and Cheltenham Town.
Adomah turns 39 in December and is five shy of 800 club appearances. His enthusiasm sits alongside the competitive streak Mat Sadler has highlighted. He scored eight goals last season and, used wisely, would undoubtedly influence matters on and off the pitch.
Handing the armband to a newcomer is uncommon, though Flint often covered when Matt was out. After 14 exits, a fresh face as skipper cannot be ruled out.
Sprangler has joined from St Johnstone and offers experience in midfield. The Austrian has a two-year deal plus an option after impressing on loan at Newport County last term. At 31, he has over 350 senior games and captained St Johnstone several times in early 2025.
